Kentucky Down Under

Well today, Michael took a half day to come home to take the kids on our first trip to Kentucky Down Under.  This was a special gift from our friends in Ohio from the Dayton Mother's of Twins Club... ok, not a gift from the club, by my friends.  :-)  It really made me a bit homesick for my friends today.

KDU is about 40 minutes south and we didn't tell the kids where we were going.  We just said, "it's a surprise."  When we got there they still didn't know where we were because you go into this dinky little gift shop before you go in.  Finally we told them that we were here to see Australian animals and they were excited.  Little did we know that the first part of the adventure was a long hike up a slight incline.  It was fine at first but by the top we were all a little tired and thirsty.  We made our way through the birds and the kids loved them.  Well they didn't love one bird because he was squawking really loud.  The kids loved seeing the birds and listening to their names.  We saw cockatoo, a kookaburro, a lory, and a lot of rainbow lorikeets.

After the birds, we made our way to an open reserve.  We sat down and waited just a few family and really lucked out.  Our nice tour guide took us and one other family.  It was a very small group and we got a lot more time with the animals.  There were emus just walking around but we were excited about the kangaroos.  There was a new baby joey that was peeking out of his momma's pouch.  Then we all got to pet the kangaroos.  Did you know kangaroos are so soft? Kind of like a kitten, that surprised me.  They were so docile and gentle and the kids were impressed.  Then we were told about all the uses for the kangaroos tail and the boys got to try and pick it up and they said it was very heavy.  They don't use their tails for weapons, but they lean back on them so they can kick harder.

When the tour was over, we went to get something to drink and decided to let the boys buy a bag of dirt... Ok, not ordinary dirt, it was filled with gem stones but you had to take it to the man made river box and sift through it to find them all.  The boys thought that was great.  We gave them all a baggie and they found their precious gems.

Soon after we found all our treasure, we sat down to wait on our cave tour.  We were fortunate to be able to go on a tour a half hour before ours because there weren't many people.  While I don't think caving is particularly hard, I will say it is tricky with three little boys that are clumsy and goofy.  I had Sam and Drew and Michael was with Ethan.  Trying to climb up wet rocks with two kids isn't something I look forward to doing anytime soon again.  ;-)  The boys loved it though.  They were looking for bats and spiders but never found either one. They really were so good in the caves, we were pleased.  After we made it up the last flight of stairs and back to the top of the earth's crust, the kids were exhausted and hungry.  So we started our journey back to the car.

It was a great family day!  I love taking pictures... almost to the point where I forget to be in the moment so I can get THE shot.  The boys were better today about just smiling and getting it over with and moving on. They said they want to go back, so all in all, we had a great day!  Thank you to my twin mommy friends.  I really appreciate your friendships and your generosity.

We CLOSED!

It's official, we closed on our home and are moved in!!  We will be driving the kids to and from school this week.  The house looks great and even though we don't have any furniture yet, we are so glad to be out of the hotel.  We had a little hiccup for the closing and it didn't happen at 12:30 like it was supposed to, but it did at 4pm.  So we are thrilled to be here.

We will be going furniture shopping this week and hope to get everything we need.

First Day of School

The boys started school today.  Even though we are still in a hotel, we plan on getting moved in tomorrow!  Yay!!  We got the boys up this morning and they were so excited.  They could hardly stand it.  Drew's teacher is Mrs. Mitchell and Sam and Ethan have Mrs. Ortiz.  Michael has today off so he will take the boys to school and pick them up with me.

We woke the boys up at 6am this morning but they were so excited that they didn't care.  We had a hard time keeping them settled in the car while we waited for the doors to open.  We prayed in the care before we left to head inside.  Inside, Drew was ready to go and waved goodbye.  Sam was a little timid but kept his head held high.  Ethan, poor Ethan, was upset and crying.  I worried about them all day.  Luckily when we went to pick them up they all had a GREAT day!  Ethan didn't stop talking about school from the time we picked them up till we got back to the hotel.  It was cute.

As we got home we had to get started on homework.  All three now have homework and I can tell, this is going to be challenging to juggle.

Here's to a great 2nd grade and Kindergarten year to our boys!!

Moving on up!

We packed up the truck so that we could drive the truck down to Kentucky.  We let Drew ride with Michael in the U-Haul.  He was beyond thrilled about that.

Sam and Ethan rode with me and were on the look out for Dad and Drew.

Welcome to Kentucky!!

Finally together after two long months...

Happy Birthday Mom, Joe, and Dad!

Well, yesterday was my mom and father-in-law's birthdays and today is my Dad's birthday!  It was always such a fun time for me to have my parents birthdays right beside each other.  I just liked that I got to celebrate them together.  When my brothers, sisters and I were younger, I always had to remind everyone of birthdays.  For some reason, no one could remember that Mom's was first.  As I got older, I quit giving everyone a heads up because I was busy with my own family.  Those first few years, I was the only one that would remember the day of but now, I'm proud to say most of them remember.  :-)

My aunt had shared a funny story with me about the first time she met my mom.  My dad's family had planned a birthday party for him and he invited mom.  She had a great time and got to meet everyone.  Soon after, my aunt and dad were talking and she asked him, "Jim, when is Jan's birthday?  Maybe we can do something for her birthday."  He looked at her with his devilish grin and said, "It was the day before mine."  My aunt said she was so embarrassed because no one knew so no one said Happy Birthday to her and made such a big fuss over dad.  But, that was my dad, he loved to tease and laugh.  I guess that's where I get it.  I only tease people I love.  The more I tease, the more I care.  hehe  Genetics are a strange thing I suppose.

My dad would have been 71 this year.  It's hard to believe it has been 4 years already.  We miss him a lot, but we talk about him a lot too.  He's still alive in our hearts.  I miss my dad so much, but I know he is at home with the Lord.  What could be better than that?  At his funeral, I wrote a poem:

I'll miss you Daddy, I hope you'll know
How much I loved you and admired you so.

You always made me feel special, a daddy's little girl
You seemed so big, so strong, so brave in this world.

You held my hand and gave bits and pieces
I didn't always listen, but you gave me hugs and kisses.

I know no little girl ever loved her daddy more,
Because the love I have for you could make an eagle soar.

I hate to say goodbye to you, I feel I need you still
But I know you'll always be with me, the love we have is real.

So for now I'll say I'll see you soon. one day I will for sure,
Save a seat for me in Heaven, love, forever more.

Our last Sunday at Washington Heights

I know we will be back to visit but it seemed really sad to have our last service at WHBC.  Before the service we went and spoke to Pastor Kisner and he prayed with us.  Such a wonderful pastor and we will miss him.  It's nice to know we can hear sermons online though.  We won't have to miss his messages.

We want to thank all of WHBC for the years of support.  Michael and I were both baptized there and Drew asked Jesus in his heart there.  We loved our Journey classmates and our wonderful teachers and mentors, the McGhee's.

The person I will miss the most is the one that I started going to the church with, Gwen.  You are the best friend anyone could ask for!  Thank you for your strength, encouragement, and wisdom.  I love you!!
